The Mirror Effect

Most people think their “self-sabotage” is a character flaw. A lack of discipline. A bad habit they just need to try harder to break.

What I’ve learned after years of working with entrepreneurs, salespeople, and high-achievers is that it’s almost never that simple.

The behaviors that cost you the most, the ones you’ve tried to stop a hundred times and can’t, usually aren’t conscious choices at all. They’re programs. Running automatically, underneath your awareness, doing exactly what they were designed to do.

Let me show you what I mean with a client who needed help in her marriage.

She Adored Her Husband. And She Was Destroying Her Marriage.

A client came to me a while back. She was in a marriage most women would envy.

He ran a thriving business and was very financially successful. He came home every day and spoiled her with gifts.

She didn’t work. He handled everything. Her husband even cooked and cleaned.

By any measure, this man was exceptional.

And yet she was cold to him. Every single day.

No thank yous. No “I love yous.” No warmth. Just a quiet, steady distance from the man she loved more than anyone in the world.

She knew she was doing it. She desperately wanted to stop. He had told her, vulnerably, that his love language was words of affirmation. That when she withheld them, something in him was slowly dying.

And still, she couldn’t stop.

So she came to me.

What We Found Underneath the Behavior

In our session, I had her do a simple exercise. I asked her to imagine being fully loving toward her husband. Warm. Affectionate. Generous with her words.

She froze.

“I can’t.”

I asked her what she was afraid would happen if she did.

What came out of her was something she had never said out loud before.

“If I’m nice to him, he’ll feel really good about himself. If he feels really good about himself, he’ll seem more attractive. If he seems more attractive, other women will notice. If they notice, he might be tempted. If he’s tempted, he might cheat. And if he cheats…”

She paused.

“He’ll leave me. Like when my mom died when I was five. Like when my dad went to prison.”

She had been abandoned twice before she was old enough to understand what abandonment meant. And somewhere deep in her subconscious, a rule had been written:

Making someone feel good leads to losing them.

Here’s What You Need to Understand About That Rule

Her subconscious was not trying to destroy her marriage.

It was trying to protect the thing she valued most: love and connection. Those were her most essential needs. And if her subconscious believed that being warm and appreciative would cause her husband to leave, it was not going to let her do it. Under any circumstances.

Being aloof felt necessary to her survival. Not consciously. She would never have said that out loud. But emotionally? It felt completely true.

And the subconscious doesn’t run on logic. It runs on what feels true.

So the pattern stayed in place. Automatic. Unconscious. Running the show every single day while her conscious mind watched, frustrated and helpless, knowing something was terribly wrong and unable to stop it.

When she looked at the belief consciously, it sounded absurd. Of course being kind to her husband wouldn’t make him cheat. But the subconscious isn’t rational. It’s a protection system. And her protection system had been running this exact program since she was five years old.

The Soldier Who Kept Fighting a War That Was Already Over

In 1974, a Japanese soldier named Hiroo Onoda was found still fighting in the Philippine jungle.

The war had ended thirty years earlier. But no one had ever told him. So he kept going. Loyal. Disciplined. Executing his mission with complete dedication, long after the mission had any meaning.

He wasn’t irrational. He wasn’t broken. He was running the program he’d been given, faithfully, in the absence of any new information.

Your subconscious operates the same way.

It doesn’t update itself automatically. It runs the programs it was given, long after those programs have stopped serving you. It doesn’t know the war is over. It just knows the mission.

And it will keep running that mission, in your relationships, your business, your finances, your health, until the program itself gets changed.

How We Changed the Program

When we located my client’s subconscious safety script — the belief underneath all the behavior — it was like finding a zip file buried deep in a computer’s operating system. Everything she had been doing traced back to that one compressed file.

We didn’t talk her out of it. We didn’t give her affirmations to repeat. We worked directly with the subconscious, speaking its language, and replaced the old program with one that was actually true: that being loving, kind, appreciative, and affirming makes relationships stronger. Not more fragile.

Then I checked my work. A few times. Because we’re not done until the old behavior is gone.

I had her imagine being warm and loving toward her husband, the same exercise she had frozen on at the start of our session, and asked her to notice what came up automatically.

She was calm. At peace. She wanted to make him happy.

We ran it a few more times until it was locked in.

She went home and told her husband she loved him. Then she told him again. Their marriage didn’t just survive. It flourished. Not because she tried harder, but because the story underneath finally got rewritten.

What This Means for You

If you have a behavior pattern that is costing you in your relationship, your income, your confidence, your ability to show up the way you know you’re capable of, and you’ve tried to change it through willpower, awareness, mindset work, learning new information, or sheer discipline and it hasn’t moved, consider this:

You’re probably not dealing with a conscious problem. You’re not dealing with a problem at the mind level.

You’re dealing with a program at the subconscious level. One you didn’t write. One that made complete sense at some point in your past, given what you knew and what you’d been through. One your subconscious installed to keep you safe.

That program can be found and it can be changed. Not slowly. Not painfully. And not by trying harder.

This is fast, fun and easy.

The question worth sitting with is this: what behavior in your life right now feels impossible to stop, even though you desperately want to? What might your subconscious be trying to protect you from?

That’s usually where the real work begins.
