Clarifying Question to ask yourself: Bring perception to neuroception.
What cues are you getting right now?
Is your Neuroception one of safety, danger or life threat?
Bring this into your active awareness.
And then ask this question: In this moment, in this place, with these people or this person, is this response needed?
Notice what happens when you find those answers.
If the answer is yes, you’re likely dealing with the neuroception of the present moment.
If the answer is no, it may be that a familiar cue from your past has reached into the present moment and grabbed you.
Notice we don’t ask whether this response is appropriate. We ask if it’s needed. Because the autonomic nervous system doesn’t use a framework of appropriate or not appropriate. The autonomic nervous system doesn’t make meaning or use things good/ bad judgments. It’s simply takes in Neuroceptic cues and enacts a response it feels is necessary to ensure its survival. And it’s only when we bring awareness to the non-conscious experience of neuroception, that we can begin to ask whether the response is needed.
Once you understand if the response you have is needed you can decide whether you want to continue to think that thought and take the desired action. Take responsibility for that thought and action!
